Vietri sul Mare
On the way to the Amalfi Coast, Vietri
is the junction to take on the motorway A3 driving from
Naples. It marks the beginning of the famous Amalfi Drive
with over two thousands bends. It is well known for the
ceramics that are produced in many factories among the inland
hills. Buying in bulk means you'll easily slash prices in
half. There are ceramic shops everywhere, where you can
purchase jugs, vases, amphoras, trays and various objects,
all with their vivid colours, and it could not be otherwise
in a place where everything is sun and light. Things to
see Church San Giovanni Battista - Built in 1732 on the
hill top of Vietri, has a beautifully tiled dome. Inside
the church there is a fine polyptych dating back to the
16th century representing the Madonna with the Child, St.
John and St. Andrew. Ceramiche Solimene - The Solimene store
is housed in an amazing bulbous tiled building on the road
to Salerno. You can also wander into the workshop next door
for a brief look at how it's done. The majority of the guestrooms
and lounges at the Santa Caterina are tiled by Solimene
